Art Time with Melody

Playing at the Play!

Join Melody Russell for story time and an improvised play (St. Michael and the Dragon, Courage or Fear!) for children 5-12 years of age.

It is all about St. Michael and the Dragon. St. Michael is said to be the ArchAngel of our times who helps us have freedom, courage and such centered power that he conquers the Dragon with his strong heart and clear vision.

Every Autumn at Harvest time when the ever feared Dragon comes down out of the cave on the mountain when the trees turn red and gold, days grow chilly and darkness comes early and creeps across the land, the people stay inside and lock the doors, close the shutters. The children hide behind their mothers and fathers as the dragon ravages the gardens and rips the pumpkins, pulls up the corn, and tears at the earth with its claws. The Dragon is fierce and scary.....The villagers gather in daylight  in their desperation and cry out for Saint Michael to come to their aid!

As evening comes, Saint Michael in his bright red cape with his golden sword rides nobly down the mountainside on his white steed to save the villagers. When he comes to the Dragon he lifts his sword up to the power of the Sun and slowly brings the sword down while staring down the Dragon. There is no violence or blood. The Dragon shudders and shrinks and creeps backwards away, retreating to the cave.

The Villagers rejoice and sing and are safe and thankful! Courage wins over fear.

Come Play at the Play in the new Harrisville Village Community Center on Saturday, October 17th  1-4pm. This is an afternoon "art Class"  $25/child. We’ll start with art, the story will be told and then I will ask who wants to play the story? There will be lots of cloth to cover several children who want to be part of the dragon, clothes and dress ups for the villagers. We will have a few cornstalks and sacrificial pumpkins, baskets, "props", something to suggest a hose. lanterns.etc.

From 1:30-2:30 we will dress up, arrange the Scene, props etc. If we have time we can color posters and make tickets. 3pm the play begins and then cider and cookies.
